General note Summary: “Maruf district of Kandahar province and Attagar sub district of Zabul province are peaceful, tranquil areas. Government troops left the military post of Abokala nearly two years ago. Much of the destruction and bombing occurred in the early years of the war. Even prior to the war these rural, mountainous regions lacked attention and continue to be economically depressed with a limited infrastructure. Population is sparse and concentrated in valleys near seasonal river beds between mountain ranges. Land holdings are generally small plots irrigated by Kareezes or diversion dams, although there are tenant farmers called Buzgar working the lands of large landowners in some sections of Maruf…”—(p.
