Summary: “While Afghan women had gradually gained modest politi8cal rights during the 20th century, this trend was abruptly halted in the 1990s when the Mujahideen, and then later the Taliban, came to power. That decade saw a violent interruption in women’s political participation. Women’s right to vote, first granted in 1965, was restored when women and men both went to the polls in 2004 in the country’s first presidential elections of the post-Taliban governments.
